Project Background
The magnificent Tiananmen Square is a globally renowned emblem of the People's Republic of China. On October 1st, 1949, Mao Zedong, one of the founding leaders of the new China, declared to the world upon the Tiananmen Rostrum the founding of the People's Republic of China. Millions watched as Chairman Mao gloriously hoisted the first National flag. From then on, this ancient building has endowed a brand-new meaning and deemed as an emblem of the People's Republic of China. This explains why the Chinese leaders always mounted to the top of the Tiananmen Rostrum to preside the grand ceremonies and activities held after founding of the new China.
The Tiananmen Square is located right at the centre of Beijing. Measuring 880 metres long from south to north and 500 metres wide from east to west, it covers a total area of 440 thousand square metres with a capacity of 1 million people. All these figures make it justifiably the largest city square in the world. Towering at the centre of the square is the Monument to the People's Heroes and the solemnly majestic Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. The Great Hall of the People is to its west, while the Revolutionary Museum of China and the Historical Museum of China to its east. With Zhengyang Gate and Qianmen Watchtower (two ancient 14-century buildings) to its south, this square is a magnificent and integral symmetrical whole. Sitting at the two sides of Tiananmen Square are the Working People's Cultural Palace and Sun Yat-sen Park. These grand buildings and the Tiananmen Rostrum make up the Tiananmen Square, a great sight in Beijing.
